The effect of media on you is crazy. And startling.
I tried to watch Extraction this week, which is a Chris Hemsworth action film on Netflix. It’s about a bounty hunter of sorts that is sent to extract an Indian drug lord’s son from the hands of a Bangladeshi drug lord. So far, pretty basic storyline, nothing surprising there. Hemsworth’s character is clearly depressed, but that’s the only kind of sad thing that has happened so far.
Then, Hemsworth gets to Bangladesh and absolutely obliterates a room full of bad guys. But I don’t think you understand what I mean by obliterates. The imagery was incredibly graphic, some guy got blasted right in the face with a bullet and blood + brains went everywhere, another man had a rake pushed right into his throat, and someone else was impaled completely on a spear. It was shocking to say the least, and I only peeked through my fingers every now and then. Hemsworth gets to the kid, who needs to be rescued, and gets him out of his bonds and sneaks him out of the compound.
I have watched graphic violence like this before, I did watch a Rambo film or two, but somehow it was different. It seemed so realistic and gory and just terrifying. I wouldn’t say I’ve been sheltered but wow I did not expect that level of violence. However, I was still kind of game for the rest of the movie! Like, I was uncomfortable, and I had the movie’s Wikipedia article pulled up on my phone to read what happens in the movie, so I don’t feel like I have to watch it all, you know? It sounds horrible, but I was pretty okay.
Then, the scene switched to the Bangladeshi drug lord, who was questioning a bunch of Bangladeshi children about how the main child character got away from the compound. They refuse to answer, and the drug lord’s guard straight up throws a 7-year-old from the roof. You hear a splatting sound and you KNOW that that was the 7-year-old.
I can’t tell you how much I cried and cried and cried about this fictional 7-year-old.
My husband stopped the movie immediately and was like yeah, we aren’t watching anymore of that, and he just hugged me as I fully mourned the death of a child in a movie. It hurt so, so much, I can’t even properly explain it. The rest of the night was a bit of a blur, my head ached and my eyes got all puffy from crying so much but all I could think about was the kids in Bangladesh that aren’t being treated like the beautiful sons and daughters of God that they are, or the kids all around the world that are suffering. This movie, the 15 or so minutes I watched of it, at least, shook me to my core.
Has that ever happened to you? Have you ever been so absolutely broken up about a movie or a scene that you have watched? Please tell me I’m not the only one?
